Introduction
Foureyes, an automotive data and lead management platform, conducted a study where they analysed 22,500 automotive firms. The study tracked over 1 billion website visits amoung, other forms of contact to attempt to identify industry bench marks to reveal how well/how poorly automotive businesses are managing sales opportunities.
The results show massive leakages in sales across the majority of the automotive industry and should be quite concerning to any owners/higher management staff members of/in Automotive businesses!
Key findings
- 43.2% of all leads were mishandled
- 65% of leads were ignored for 24 hours or more
- 60% of customers purchase in 3 days, even if it is not with the original firm they contacted
What does this all mean?
43.2% of leads were mishandled meaning they were not logged into CRM systems, calls were ignored and follow ups were never followed up. The overwhelming majority of mishandled leads led to the lead being lost completely!
According to separate reports from Super office & Help scout in 2025 90% of customers expect an instant response. This isn’t an industry specific statistic but given the amount of alternatives available to customers in the Automotive industry it’s best to not make your competitors job easier for them by giving your customers a reason to swap.
The final statistic speaks for itself over half of customers will switch over to someone else after a maximum of 3 days with no response. 3 days may seem like a long enough amount of time that it might be hard to miss a lead but that’s the maximum not the minimum in practice customers switch quicker most of the time, think about if somethings wrong with their car they need that car to get to work, pick up their kids and just live life in general they don’t care who fixes it as long as it’s fixed.
What can we do?
There’s the more traditional solutions such as hiring more staff to manage inbound leads, Foureyes report found that leads via phone call are the most likely to lead to finalised sales so the option of outsourcing some inbound leads to call centres also exists and of course you can always upgrade your CRM systems.
However we are fortunate to live an amazing age of technology allowing for solutions that are not only more cost and time efficient but deliver far better results then just stacking on staff members!
